Sumatra Tsunami Donations

Dear Friends,

A donation collection has been set up through the Indonesian Surfing Championship (ISC) for two organizations now helping tsunami victims in Sumatra. Below is a forwarded message I received from Matt George, who is in charge of one of these operations. In fact he and Josh Symon are already on a boat probably there now. Their last correspondence to me was that water and water purification were needed urgently.

Matt was on the scene of the 2004 sumatran tsunami with thelastmileoperations.org who also helped with the Pakistan Earthquake, Hurricane Katrina in the US and more. For more info check out lastmileoperations.org

The ISC is accepting donations because several people wanting to donate have mentioned that bank transfers to outside Indonesia cost quite a bit and Paypal is still a bit too foreign for people here. Matt George doesn't have an Indonesian account, so for Indonesian donations ISC has offered to help and will transfer every cent to Matt.

The ISC BCA Bank details are below. Please write "Donation For Mentawai, MATT GEORGE" in the description so ISC can separate the money. If you want to donate to the USA, the details are at the bottom of this message.

The other group we are accepting for is the Red Cross who you can also donate through ISC to. For Red Cross, please write "Donation For Mentawai, RED CROSS" in the memo.

But the real highlight was Mojo’s Flying Burritos, where we almost wept at the site of a “Mission Burrito” on the menu. And it was good too, unlike most of the sad impostors we have tried (seriously people, if it is made out of a pancake, you absolutely CANNOT call it a burrito! The UN should make some international standards on these things. Sheesh). Consequently, we went back more than half a dozen times to all of their locations in Bali. Eric almost bought their “Viva el Burrito” T-shirt to commemorate our long-awaited reunion with the stuffed tortilla goodness.

I know what you're thinking…Burrito's in Bali? Two words – Mojo Burrito! We dined at Mojo's about 3 times during our stay in Seminyak. I'm not ashamed of it either. They had good food and even better margaritas. ...

Not that there's anything wrong with this

but we've got Corona back in stock, yes "the unparalleled flavor of relaxation." We can't help but think of all the fun things to do with a Corona. Don't just stop at adding a lime.

Here's the Baja Fog: open Corona,oh so carefully pour a shot of tequila in, it will float on top of the beer. When you're ready to drink, squeeze in the lime and you'll get a misty fog in the neck of the bottle. Take a drink and you'll see it's a shot of tequila with a built in chaser. Delicious but dangerous...

Michelada: Corona beer + hot sauce + worcestershire sauce + salt Strange but good, like a beer Bloody Mary.

We're so excited when we can buy our products from an awesome source like this organic farm. Owned by a Balinese farmer using entirely chemical free methods, this place is so inspiring that I make the 3 hour trek to dig up the veggies myself once in awhile!

Beetroot and carrots for our Brainiac Juice

Malabar spinach winding up a bamboo pole. Have you tried this? The leaves are thick and firm, like er...Chihuahua ears. They are high in vitamins A, E, calcium and iron and frequently used in Chinese cooking, we like to toss them in the juicer to make our vitamin rich Daily Greens. It's also a stunner in the garden with its jewel-like clusters of little berries.

Check out this dirt- probably more nutritious than some food I've eaten.

We all put on our pakaian adat and headed to Denpasar to celebrate the wedding of one of our Kuta Mojo's cooks. Well, not all of us. As it turns out, people in the big city don't seem to be all that strict about wearing the traditional clothes to a ceremony, but what can I say, years of living in Ubud have trained us when in doubt, wear the sarong. Lovely ceremony with a female priest and all the young relatives having their teeth filing ceremony at the same time as the wedding.

Mulyana and the lovely Dian- we wish you many happy years together!

I was looking at photos of past vacations in Mexico and feeling sentimental about going back for a visit. Food is a great way to relive a fond memory...so today it just had to be Baja Fish Tacos. The food in this photo is now just a delicious memory too! If you want to order this exactly- Baja Fish Tacos with the Chipotle Mayo on the side, brown rice instead of cilantro rice, black beans and a lime-y Pico de Gallo. And at 34.000 rupiah, a pretty cheap way to visit Baja California.

In this corner, our popular Diablo Chicken Wrap: chicken coated in super spicy cayenne pepper and other spices, onions, lettuce and mayo, available as tortilla wrap or as a baguette sandwich. Chili-heads love this chicken, also available as a burrito ingredient.

El Gringo was put on the menu for all the friends of Mojo addicts that maybe weren't in the mood for Mexican food 7 days in a row! Grilled chicken, avocado, egg, cucumber, tomato, lettuce wrapped in a tortilla or on a baguette, fresh and filling like everything else on the menu.

About a year ago, when we started Mojo's, a food writer commented that we probably couldn't survive because we had such a limited menu. It's true, we don't have one of those "international" menus so popular in Bali that feature everything from Spaghetti Bolognese to Nasi Goreng to "Chicken Gordon Bleu." Was it possible to have a Mexican restaurant that didn't also serve nasi goreng and burgers?

We make burritos, tacos, enchiladas and nachos. That's it. And if you're craving the best damn burrito, taco, enchilada or nachos in Bali, Mojo's is the place to go.

We admit we're obsessed. We have hour-long meetings about avocados. I've gotten texted on a someone's day off about how he finally figured out the correct way to roll a corn tortilla for optimum crispiness. We work on making every ingredient as delicious and fresh as possible. Our flour and corn tortillas are handmade abuela-style every day. Salsas, guacamole, pinto beans, black beans, brown rice, cilantro rice...yep, all made from scratch.

And thanks to all of you, we did quite a bit better than survive. Thank you for eating!

This is the day when EVERYONE has to join their villages in walking to the sea. It's highly recommended to not travel in a car today if you have any sense at all. Of course, these photos are from my car.

Melasti is a ceremony before Nyepi, the Balinese new year. One Mojo's Burritos is on the road to Petitenget Beach, one of the most spectacular places to see Melasti.

Fresh Mexican Restaurant

We're serving fresh, homemade Mexican food that's healthy, delicious and affordable enough to eat every day. While we use imported Mexican chilis, everything else is made from local and organic products whenever possible. Every ingredient is prepared with love and you'll really taste the difference when you compare with other Mexican restaurants.

For our tacos, we start by grinding the corn, hand rolling the tortillas and frying them to order. Black beans are simmered for hours until tender; our 3 salsas: roja, chipotle and Pico de Gallo made fresh throughout the day. Taste our guacamole and see if you agree that it's "the Best Guacamole Ever." (and if you're the one who wrote that on Tripadvisor, thanks a million, our staff really felt appreciated when I showed them your review:)
